The “Swiss Flag” Fallacy: Confronting Modern Colonialism in European Business Networks.

Footprints of Karma: Confronting the Ghost of Arrogance in European Business

In 2012, a vision was born in Amsterdam. Our company was founded on the principles of hard work and cross-cultural expansion. Today, we operate across Europe, with Poland becoming one of our most vital markets. We aren’t just a business; we are a tapestry of experiences—founders born in Europe, partners settled from India for over a decade, and myself, a dreamer from the Caribbean who found a home and a mission in the heart of the EU.

However, being a “newcomer” in an old world often brings challenges that aren’t listed in any business manual.

The Digital Disruption Recently, our long-standing social media presence—built over a decade—was deactivated without warning. This is the terrifying reality of modern business: years of digital history can vanish in a click. We adapted quickly. One of our directors verified his identity through a paid subscription, and I took the helm of our marketing, advertising, and content production.

We deal in transparency. We manage property rentals in central Warsaw, many of which are owned by our founders. We offer a “no-commission” model, often seasoned with a bit of humble humor: “Don’t pay us a fee; just buy us a beer.” This approach served us well for years on Airbnb, but as we transitioned to local Facebook groups to fill a sudden vacancy near Varso Place, we hit a wall. Not a wall of policy, but a wall of arrogance.

The “Swiss Flag” and the Gatekeeper While posting our legitimate listings, I was met with hostility from a group administrator whose name echoed a mix of Polish and German heritage. Despite my polite inquiries as to why our authentic posts were being flagged as spam while “garbage” content littered the group, the response I received was a chilling example of modern bias.

He told me: “Marketing cheap Chinese watches under a false Swiss flag doesn’t buy you much credit.”

I was stunned. Not because he was right—our watch brands are authentic, Swiss-made, and listed with the Swiss Watch Federation—but because of the sheer weight of his assumption. He didn’t see a business; he saw a “non-European” and assumed a fraud. He attempted to use his tiny kingdom of a 20k-member Facebook group to play the role of a judge, jury, and executioner.

A History of Arrogance This isn’t just about a Facebook post. This is about a mindset. When I looked at his words, I didn’t just see a grumpy admin; I saw the echoes of a history that Europe often tries to camouflage.

From the colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia to the scars of two World Wars and the current tragedies in Gaza and Ukraine, there is a recurring theme: the hunger for power and the arrogance to believe one has the right to dictate the lives of others. Whether it is the grand stage of geopolitics or the small stage of a social media group, the “Lord of the Group” mentality is a symptom of a dated, superior ego.

They speak of human rights, yet we see that rights often belong to those with the deepest pockets or the “right” heritage. They speak of authenticity, yet they dismiss the hard work of global citizens who are contributing to their economy.

The Path Forward: Choosing Karma To the admin who blocked me: Your power game removed me from your group, but it fueled my fire to build something better. My founders taught me to look for solutions, not excuses. I will build a community larger than yours—one rooted in freedom of speech, factual integrity, and the mentorship of newcomers rather than the bullying of them.

We are all temporary visitors on this planet. When the dust of our digital arguments settles and our businesses are handed to the next generation, only one thing remains: The Footprints of our Karma.

What will your footprint be? Mine will be one of resilience, inclusion, and the refusal to let arrogance dim the light of a dreamer.
