The sun is setting on the final day of the year.
If you are like most people, you are currently standing in the mental doorway between the Past and the Future. In one hand, you hold a crisp, terrifyingly blank sheet of paper labeled “Resolutions.” In the other, you hold the crumpled, coffee-stained list from last January.
It is human nature to look at that crumpled list and see only the gaps. We see the weight we didn’t lose, the novel we didn’t write, the savings account we didn’t fill. We tend to measure our year by the distance between where we are and where we wanted to be.
But measuring the gap is a recipe for entering the New Year feeling already behind.
Before you start aggressively planning for the person you want to become tomorrow, I want you to pause. Put down the pen. Stop looking at the summit you haven’t reached yet.
Turn around. Look at the mountain you just climbed.
The Myth of the Blank Slate
We love the idea of January 1st because it feels like a “fresh start.” But you are not a fresh start. You are not a blank slate.
You are a tapestry of everything you have weathered over the last 365 days. You are walking into the New Year carrying the wisdom, the scars, and the resilience of the year leaving you.
To truly honor that, you don’t need a Resolution List. You need a Reverse Bucket List.
What is a Reverse Bucket List?
A traditional bucket list is a collection of wants—a catalog of things you haven’t done yet. It is defined by lack.
A Reverse Bucket List is defined by abundance. It is a catalog of what you have already done, specifically the hard, quiet, invisible things you survived to get here. It is the evidence of your resilience.
When we obsess over achievement, we forget that survival itself is an achievement.
What Belong on Your List?
I’m not talking about the promotions, the vacations, or the shiny Instagram moments. I am talking about the silent victories that no one else saw.
As you sit down to write this list, look for these moments:
- The Days You kept Going: Write down that Tuesday in March when you felt overwhelmed by grief or anxiety, but you still got up, made coffee, and faced the world.
- The Boundaries You Set: Write down the time you said “no” to protect your peace, even though your voice shook when you said it.
- The Growth That Hurt: Write down a mistake you made, corrected, and learned from.
- The Softness You Maintained: Write down the fact that despite the harshness of the news and the world, you managed to stay kind.
“We spend December 31st looking at a map of where we want to go, ignoring the mountain we just climbed.”
Why This Matters Tonight
If you enter the New Year focusing only on what you lack, you enter it with a scarcity mindset. You enter it feeling not good enough.
But if you write your Reverse Bucket List first, you enter the New Year with proof.
You have proof that you can handle change. You have proof that you can endure heartbreak. You have proof that you can navigate uncertainty. You are not crossing the threshold into the New Year empty-handed; you are crossing it armed with the knowledge of your own strength.
Your Assignment Before the Ball Drops
Take ten minutes tonight. Grab a piece of paper or open the notes app on your phone. Title it “What I Survived.”
List three hard things you navigated this year. List three things you learned about yourself. List one moment where you were proud of your resilience.
Read it over. Take a deep breath.
You did that. You lived that.
So, when the clock strikes midnight, don’t just toast to the “New You.” Raise a glass to the “Current You.” The you that fought through the doubts, the fatigue, and the challenges of the last 365 days to make it here.
You don’t need to be a new person to have a great year. You just need to realize how capable the person you already are is.
Happy New Year.
