Everybody has a story, but not all stories are told. This is the story of a man who faced over two decades of rejection, financial ruin, and personal setbacks, only to emerge as an award-winning filmmaker, a respected entrepreneur, and the architect of his own destiny. This is the story of Mohinder Pal Singh Sobti, also known as Bobby Singh, a man who proves that a dream, fueled by relentless hard work, can never be extinguished.

The Spark: A Father’s Prophetic Words

The journey begins in a humble garage. As a teenager, Bobby dreamed not of carburetors and engines, but of cameras and movie sets. While working for his father, his passion for filmmaking was an open secret. His father, with incredible foresight, saw a different path for his son. He told him, “Continue to dream and work hard in life. One day, you will come to a point where you will be able to work with your dreams.”

Those words became the bedrock of Bobby’s life. He believed them. He dropped out of regular school but not out of education, attending evening classes to study marketing and advertising. The garage was his day job, but his dream was his life’s work. He launched a small production studio, shooting photos for models and even landing a campaign for a jeans brand. But dreams require capital, and with little investment and a struggling cash flow, he had to close his first venture.

A World of Experience: From the Caribbean to Corporate Europe

Life’s path is rarely a straight line. Bobby took on a job as an account executive at an advertising agency, but long hours and low pay made it unsustainable. A new chapter began with a job at a multinational corporation. Here, he hoped to learn management, but corporate politics proved stifling.

Fueled by his father’s ambitious spirit and a desire to escape family arguments, an opportunity arose through a penpal — a job in the Caribbean. He moved silently, embarking on an adventure that would shape him profoundly. For five years, he worked and traveled across the Caribbean Islands, South America, and the USA. He even shared his real-world knowledge as a visiting faculty member at a management school, teaching marketing and hospitality. Though loved by his students, his lack of a higher-degree diploma eventually ended his teaching career.

Yet, nothing demotivated him. Every failure was a lesson. Every setback was a setup for a comeback. The echo of his father’s voice — work hard, keep your dreams  — was a constant companion.

His company eventually relocated him to the Netherlands to develop their European business. After a year, the pull of his original dream became too strong to ignore.

The Amsterdam Setback: A Dream Derailed

Curious about the inner workings of the film world, Bobby enrolled in a short course at the New York Film Academy. The experience was transformative. “Back in the film school, we made a film every day and screened it on weekends,” he recalls. Buoyed by this creative energy, he teamed up with friends from the academy to start a production studio in Amsterdam. Their goal was audacious: shoot a feature film in one month and live as filmmakers forever.

Unfortunately, passion was overshadowed by ego. The project that could have been completed in a month never happened. Bobby lost all his savings, a failure that led to personal turmoil and shame among family and friends, who branded him a “loser.”

But the one person who never lost faith was his father. He offered not judgment, but more motivation and a small loan, repeating the same timeless advice: “Work hard no matter what job you do and continue to dream.”

The Polish Rebirth: Forging Success from Scratch

With his father’s support, Bobby relocated to Poland, hoping to rebuild and pursue independent filmmaking with the professional gear he owned. The reality was harsh. The Polish film industry during 2009 was not welcoming to outsiders, especially making indie films.

The struggle was immense. He started a silver jewelry business, invested in the stock market, and worked as a freelance photographer and videographer, often facing underpayment or no payment at all. He took a job with a nutrition company where he was so efficient — achieving two years’ worth of targets in just eight months — that they let him go, claiming they had no more work for him.

Instead of despair, he saw an opportunity. He returned to a previous employer who knew his value. They hired him instantly, entrusting him with business development across Europe. This is where his diverse skills finally converged. He successfully launched and developed markets for Italian pasta, Dutch cheese, Belgian chocolates, Spanish extra virgin olive oil, and Bordeaux French Chateau wines.

His success was undeniable. The company offered him shares, making him a Director and Co-founder. He then built a new venture in the stock and metals market and, remarkably, developed a thriving Swiss watch marketing business from the ground up.

An Entrepreneurial Empire Built on Passion

Bobby’s journey shows that opportunity often comes from listening to others. When a customer was unhappy with a watch strap, Bobby didn’t just find a replacement; he created a solution. He traveled to Italy, learned the art of hand-stitching leather, and founded Sobti ™ handmade leather goods. Today, his brand is the only Indian one registered with the prestigious Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium.

His passion was so infectious that when he shared the story with a Swiss watchmaker, they invited him to design his own watch. The Sobti ™ Swiss-made automatic watch was born — a limited edition timepiece with his name on it, a testament to a journey that started in a garage.

The Dream Realized: “That Girl from Ukraine”

In 2019, Bobby lost his father. The following year, the world went into lockdown. Confined to his home, he didn’t stagnate; he innovated. He started modeling the Swiss watches he sold, which evolved into the Stylish Indian blog, a platform sharing a man’s lifestyle insights.

During this deeply reflective period, Bobby reached one of the most emotional milestones of his creative journey — composing a song dedicated to his father. Titled In the Name of My Father and now released on YouTube, the song is a heartfelt tribute to the man whose guidance, encouragement, and quiet strength shaped every chapter of his life. For Bobby, this wasn’t just music; it was a way to honour the legacy of the person who believed in him before the world ever did.

During this time, he reached out to a friend from film school. He needed an actress. His friend, now a businesswoman and mother, couldn’t act but connected him with someone. The actress initially rejected his Hollywood-Bollywood style romantic comedy script. But she left him with a challenge: “If you have a story which will touch my heart, I will do it for free.”

That challenge sparked the creation of ‘That Girl from Ukraine’. He wrote a story from the heart, told it to her, and she couldn’t refuse. After years of dreaming, Bobby Singh was finally a filmmaker.

On a friend’s encouragement, he submitted the film to a few festivals. The result was staggering. The film became an official selection in over 35 film festivals and won more than 10 awards, including Best Indie Film. He has since completed two more feature films and produced six original songs.

A Philosophy Forged in Fire

After facing an average of 100 rejections a year for two decades, Bobby’s advice to aspiring filmmakers is simple and profound:

“If you want to be a filmmaker, just make a film. STOP discussing what camera to use, what equipment to use, what blockbuster story to write. When you are working with big dreams and no budgets, just make a film. Keep it true, keep it simple.”

He believes in the Universe, in Karma, and that every person we meet is for a reason. His guiding principle is clear: “You don’t need to keep all 8 billion people on this planet happy. If you are the writer, director, and producer, and there is one actress who believes in you, just make sure you can keep that one person happy. Because keeping one person happy is the start to a path of happiness.”

When Silence became a song – A Quiet Acknowledgment

When the noise finally softened, I felt the need to leave something behind, not as an achievement, but as a quiet acknowledgment of the journey itself. ‘Footprints of My Karma’ was born from that place. It is a reflection on every soul I encountered, every lesson earned through struggle, every moment of grace that followed hardship. Some paths crossed briefly, others changed me forever. Where I fell short, I ask forgiveness with humility; where I was guided, I remain grateful. This song is not about the past, it is about understanding it, accepting it, and walking forward with clarity, respect, and peace.
